One Step Beyond the Craft

You may not realise that Freemasonry is made of a number of different 'Progressive Orders'. This series will explain these various Orders and how they are linked.
Mark Master Masons
The full title of this Order is Mark Master Masons of England and Wales, and its District and Lodges Overseas. It is more familiarly known as ‘Mark’.
Meetings of Mark Master Masons are held in Lodges and are laid out in a similar way to a Craft Lodge room.
Qualification for joining is that a candidate must be a Master Mason. The joining ceremony is called ‘Advancement’.
The regalia consists of an apron and breast jewel. The edges of the apron are light blue and crimson.
The Order is based on the building of the first Temple at Jerusalem. The candidate is first acknowledged as a Mark Man then advanced to a Mark Master Mason where a ‘Mark’ is chosen to identify the stonework they have produced. The Advancement Ceremony teaches the lesson that education is the reward of labour and the dramatic message that dishonesty can never succeed.
Next week we will introduce you to the Royal Ark Mariners.
Special thanks to  for the photographs and explanations of each progressive Order .

Special Interest Lodges in Bucks

Pegasus Lodge 5637

This lodge is one of the provinces oldest special interest lodges.  It was originally formed as a lodge for those with military affiliation, formed by masons with a connection to the Royal Air Force, from nearby RAF Halton, near Wendover.

When they were first consecrated most of the applicants were members of, or associated with the Royal Air Force. Nowadays there are no such restrictions, although they are all proud of their shared heritage, and still have members with an RAF or aviation background.

One of the lodge's most notable Past Masters was Jerry Fray DFC, who was also a member of Daedalus Lodge, one of their sister lodges. Jerry played a key roll in the famous Dambuster's raid in World War 2, and you can find out more about him here:

http://freemasonrytoday.com/features/dambusters-captured-the-incredible-story-jerry-fray

Aprons Off: The Real Freemason

An insight into the life of a Freemason outside the masonic centre.

AN AMBULANCE DRIVER
Name: Gordon King
Age: 57
Location: Kings Langley
Joined: 1995
Lodges: Lodge of Concorde

Gordon drives ambulances for the ECMO Unit at St Thomas' hospital. After 30 years at the met office and as a Detective Inspector Gordon retired.
Gordon then volunteered to drive ambulances after they were desperately short in numbers during the pandemic, finally ending up at St. Thomas after moving once again. His career in the Police and during his retirement in the NHS has quite simply been about helping people who need it the most, Gordon emphasises how freemasonry resonates with this.

Gordon's favourite aspect of Freemasonry because of this is giving back. Gordon likes the ways in which freemasonry has charity at its core. Gordon enjoys the sense of satisfaction in helping people both in freemasonry and driving ambulances. He also mentions a selfless culture, where many of its members will always lend a "sympathetic ear" to those who need it most and provide what they can to help.

Freemasonry has been a part of Gordon's life for a very long time as a member of nearly 40 years, so it has helped him most of his adult life. Gordon is inspired by the selfless actions of many of the members and he always works in many ways to emulate their example.

To be better and to help others truly is one of the core principles on which masonry is founded.

One Step Beyond the Craft

You may not realise that Freemasonry is made of a number of different 'Progressive Orders'. This series will explain these various Orders and how they are linked.

Royal Arch
The continuation of the Third Degree is the 'Supreme Order of the Holy Royal Arch'. It is more familiarly known as ‘Chapter’.

Meetings of a Royal Arch Chapter are known as Convocations and have three Principals who rule the Chapter as opposed to the single Master in a Craft Lodge.
Qualification for joining is that a candidate must be a Master Mason. The joining ceremony is called 'Exaltation' and the members are called Companions.
The regalia consists of an apron, sash and breast jewel. The colours of the apron and jewel are crimson and dark blue which vary depending on a member’s rank.
The Order is based on the return of the Jewish tribes from their captivity in Babylon to rebuild the Temple at Jerusalem having been destroyed at the end of King Solomon's reign. During the preparation for the building of the Second Temple, a momentous discovery is made and it is this discovery that is the basis of the Exaltation Ceremony.

Fry-Yay Friday for Watling Street

On the 12th May 2023, Watling Street Chapter No. 1639 played host to the Provincial Grand Chapter Team for an Exaltation Convocation.

The Chapter meets at St Giles Parish Rooms in Stony Stratford which is a delightful converted church complete with a winding staircase into the Chapter room.

Provincial DC Paul had his work cut out arranging the procession into the Chapter going from two rows formed up in the dining room, down to single file up the stairs them back into two rows once in the room.

Under his expert guidance it all went perfectly though.

One Step Beyond the Craft

You may not realise that Freemasonry is made of a number of different 'Progressive Orders'. This series will explain these various Orders and how they are linked.

Craft Freemasonry
Every Freemason begins by being Initiated into the 'Craft' which is the starting point in their Masonic journey. The Craft consists of Three Degrees including the 'Royal Arch'.

On being Initiated a Freemason enters the First Degree and is called an Entered Apprentice. On passing their Second Degree they then become a Fellowcraft. Finally, they are raised to the Third Degree and are known as a Master Mason.  Irrespective of their rank, they are treated equally and are called a brother (even in women's Freemasonry)

The three degrees are what most people will have seen pictures of, with members wearing the familiar light and dark blue collars and aprons. In the picture it start on the left with the plain white Entered Apprentice apron and goes through to Grand Rank dress apron on the right side of the picture.

Special Interest Lodges in Bucks

Buckinghamshire Emergency Services Lodge 3077

Based at the Bletchley Masonic Centre, but with meetings held at Aylesbury, Stony Stratford, Winslow & Beaconsfield.  A travelling lodge.

Grenfell Lodge 3077 had fallen on hard times when a group of Buckinghamshire Freemasons stepped into lend a helping hand. Early 2017 this group joined the Lodge and the Buckinghamshire Emergency Services Lodge was born.

You don’t have to be a serving or former member of the emergency services to be part of the fellowship. Since reforming they have had five initiates and thirteen joiners, and now stand at 23 members with more to come

They enjoy a fine fellowship and have recently started wearing their service headwear and miniature medals during the Festive Board.  Members of the Emergency Services have been awarded jubilee medals since 2002 as well as long service medals.

Last Friday The Household Division Lodge held an exciting meeting at Slough Masonic Centre

The meeting was for our their new members, former Life Guard and Scots Guard and was attended by 63 members and visitors, also welcoming three more joining members.

The White Table Festive Board saw friends, partners, and future candidates for the Lodge totalling 87 dining.

Those in attendance were treated to an excellent after dinner speech by Paul ‘Tug’ Hartley GM. Tug gave an excellent insight to his life through his “Hero to Zero” talk, one which resonated with so many present. His eye opening account of how his life changed when he was awarded the George Medal, and not all for the best, was said to be one of the best they had the privilege to listen to.

Throughout the course of the evening our charitable donations raised over £2000 that will see donations made to Pilgrim Bandits Charity and Hull4Heroes on behalf of Tug. As well as continued efforts to raise money for the Worshipful Master’s chosen charity, Royal Star & Garter.

We only regret the rides we didn't take!

Visiting is a wonderful part of being a freemason - especially when it's on two wheels!
Sunday was a prime example, where Bucks masons met with masons from Surrey, London, Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and other counties, to have a brew and a lot of light hearted banter.

Freemasonry means different things for different people, but for the Widows Sons it means Brotherhood in abundance.

The happy optimism of spring!

Charles acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022, upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.
This will be the first coronation of a British monarch in the 21st century and the 40th to be held at Westminster Abbey since 1066!

Sir Jony Ive has designed the official coronation emblem for King Charles III, depicting flora from each of the four UK nations as a gesture to the King’s love of the natural world.
The rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales and the shamrock of Northern Ireland merge to form the shape of St Edward’s crown, which the King will be crowned with during the service.
The emblem’s colour palette is informed by the colours of the union flag: red, white and blue. On the primary emblem, the central crown appears in blue, surrounded by red floral patterns, which is encircled by a blue serif typeface.
Secondary versions of the coronation emblem include pairings of pink and red hues, light and dark blue, black and grey and white on a blue background.

We look forward to seeing the majesty and spectacle of the Coronation next weekend. What will you be doing on the day to celebrate?

Although King Charles III is not a Freemason, we toast him at every meeting because he is regarded as the head of our order. "To the king and the craft" is the toast.

Read more about the emblem here: https://www.designweek.co.uk/issues/6-february-10-february-2023/jony-ive-king-charles-iiis-coronation-emblem/

It's good to visit! Travelling to other lodges, to attend their meetings, is an important social aspect of Freemasonry
